Registration Now Open for the MGHA Classic

The Madison Gay Hockey Association's Tournament Committee is pleased to announce the opening of registration for the 2010 MGHA Classic Gay Hockey Tournament.

The tournament will be held Friday, April 30th through Sunday, May 2nd at Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton. We will be utilizing their two rinks, offering teams a minimum of three games. There are to be two divisions individuals can enter, recreational and competitive.

The registration fee is $65, which includes a jersey and the reception on Saturday, May 1st at the Brass Ring in Madison. Teams from all over the United States, Canada, and Europe have been invited, and there is excitement over the addition of a Midwestern gay hockey tournament. This is a great opportunity to meet and play with and against players from other organizations from all over.

www.madisongayhockey.org/tournament has all of the pertinent details. Registration is available from there as well as a FAQS page. Please email MGHAClassicInfo@madisongayhockey.org with any questions, comments, assistance on deciding which division to enter or any general arm-twisting needs.

Smart Skills for Hockey

Smart Skills

Protective equipment is a good first step to staying injury fee. But you can't just rely on your equipment -- you've got to also keep up your skills and know-how. Here are 12 key steps to keeping yourself safe on the ice:

1. Always Work On Your Skating.
Improve your balance, agility, crossovers, forward and back skating, stopping.

2. Keep Your Head Up With the Puck
Learn to stick handle without looking down, so that you don't miss what's going on.

3. Stay Alert At All Times
Knew where you are on the ice, where your opponents are, and where the boards are. Keep looking around.

4. Always Approach the Boards on an Angle
Don't go straight against the sides. You can get pushed and fall into them head first, which can lead to serious brain and spinal injuries.

5. Get Your Arms Up Going Into the Boards
Arms and hands can act as buffer, protecting you against impact.

6. Know the Danger Zone
Stay close to the boards to prevent being thrust into them headfirst.

7. Never Hit From Behind
See the whites of his (or her) eyes before making contact. Don't crosscheck the guy's back, or if he's off balance. That's how injuries occur.

8. Never Hit Your Opponent's Head
Don't check anyone's melon, only use shoulder-to-shoulder checks. And don't use your elbow, hands or stick to the face.

9. Control Your Stick
Keep your stick on the ice, literally, and away from the other guy's head. Even when shooting, don't let your stick come up. Know where your follow-through will end up.

10. Don't Make Suicide Passes
Don't pass to someone who's about to get checked, or who doesn't see an opponent behind him. Remember, you're responsible for your teammates.

11. Communicate with Your Teammates
Talk on ice. Be the eyes for your teammates -- tell them when the opponent is approaching. It's safer for everyone to know where the puck is.

12. Respect, Respect, Respect
Treat your body with your respect, your teammates with respect, and even your opponents with respect.
