After a 14 year self-inflicted penalty box, Eric returned to the ice with a vengeance starting with the Chelsea Challenge of 2004. With a number of years under his blades, Eric finished his last season (1990) in the penalty box while playing for the NATO Ice-Hockey team and the Belgium National League.
Eric is no stranger to the penalty box, but always enters with a smile and was even awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the Adams Division in the Coors Cup 2004 (after seven penalties in three games). Eric received a MVP award at the Coors Cup 2004. He has also captained a number of tournament teams to near wins and truly believes in his teams and says, “Winning and losing is a result. Doing either as a team is an achievement.”
A gym-oholic, Eric uses each workout for hockey conditioning, to include power lifting, off-ice shooting and interval cardio training. Eric’s ability to muscle his way through the rink does not go unnoticed by the opposing team and referees. After a second division win with the Lions, Eric took an extended summer break to fly about the world for work.
We asked Eric how he was keeping his skills up, “I’ve still got World Cup fever after traveling in Europe this summer and I take my soccer ball with me to kick around at work and on my trips. The power lifting is going strong and I’ve really worked on core balance and sprints. I may not have the ice time, but I’ll be in great condition for next season with the Wizards.”
Eric plays center ice and enjoys the offensive aspect of the game. You may also find him center stage at local events in supporting gay sports and even center page when you least expect it.
