Wayne began playing hockey in the spring of 2002 after taking a couple of years off from organized sports. He was missing the excitement of team sports, but didn't want to return to the swimming pool. After attending some of his cousin's pee-wee hockey games, Wayne thought ice hockey looks like a lot of fun and started to a search for an LGBT hockey team in New York City. He began playing on the Rockets and quickly advanced to the next level by joining the Hurricanes in their inaugural season.

Wayne can be seen in the May 2004 "Jock" issue of Instinct magazine, on the "Puck Buddies" segment featuring the NYCGHA on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and in the 2004 Hockey Boys Calendar as Mr. January.
