Rockets Dev League 2nd Place March 10, 2001
The Rockets earned second place in the Winter 2000-2001 Developmental League, losing the Championship 4-2 to the undefeated Blue Bombers. The two times the Rockets held the lead in the Championship game were the only times that the Bombers were behind all season.
Rob Rogers assisted on both Rockets goals. The first was a hard shot from the point which Seth Radwell shoveled in off the rebound to give the Rockets 1-0 lead. The second goal was also carried up ice by Rogers. Gary Adams took two rebound shots and Alex Galvez one, before Chris Prokop finally got the biscuit in the goal over a sprawled goaltender. The Rockets retook the lead 2-1.
The last minute of play was particularly exciting when the Rockets pulled goaltender Chris B. Bill Leitner joined the first line (Adams, Galvez and Prokop) and the defensive specialists Brian Harrington and Rogers in an all out effort to tie the 3-2 game. Alas! Victory glowed dimmer as the opponent scored on the empty net, putting the game out of reach at 4-2 with a few seconds remaining.
Kevin Jennings gave his pint of blood quite literally, taking a slapper to the shin and not noticing the resulting gusher until after the game. An extra effort award goes to pugilist Gilbert Gray, one the NYCGHA's most improved players, who helps to ensure that no ones gets chippy without retaliation. Dean Papa fills the center's role in helping out his defensemen admirably and very physically, easing the load for Gary Shapiro and Captain Jeff Minck, who are new blueliners. Duke Sherwood is easily the Rockets most improved player. The extra practice sessions each week are paying off.
Rockets unable to play in the Championship are forwards Brian Winkler and Paul Zeman and defenseman Dave Ayala.
Alex Galvez earned the right to carry home the Rockets trophy, as the leading goal scorer. The trophy will circulate among the team through the next season.
