Kevin started playing hockey in junior high school in the little town in North Carolina where he grew up. Kevin still wishes his team could have gotten more ice time than its weekly slot, when the Winston-Salem Coliseum put down ice for a minor league team. Kevin's Mom forced her boy to quit hockey after he lost a tooth to the sport. The NYCGHA is very glad to see Kevin end his 25 year absence from the ice. And Mom, don't worry! he's protecting his teeth. Besides, says Kevin, "I have dental!"
Kevin left the North Carolina woods to go North to Harvard in 1981 and came to New York in 1993 for his Master's at Columbia. The city seduced him and Kevin has stayed right here in the Big Apple.
After teaching high school for ten years and being advisor to the nation's first Gay-Straight Alliance student club, Kevin founded GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, a national organization working to end anti-gay bias in K-12 schools. After 14 years in that position, Kevin stepped down and is today Assistant Deputy Secretary of Education in the Obama administration.
Kevin is also an accomplished author with six published books. Information about his books can be found on his personal website, KevinJennings.com.
After two years off due to a heart attack that occured at the rink in August 2005, Kevin returned to the ice in the Fall of 2007 and promptly scored a goal and an assist in his second game back, proving that, "Practice is greatly overrated."
